MANIPUR, the birthplace of Polo, is bounded by Nagaland in the north, Mizoram in the south, Upper Mayanmar in the east and Cachar district of Assam in the west. Her people include the Meities, Nagas, Kukis and other communities, which have lived in complete harmony for centuries. An alluring atmosphere of mystery, a land wrapped in velvety silence,is what instantly strikes a visitor to Manipur, which literally means 'theland of jewels'. These are the people whose folklore, myths, dances, martial arts, and exotic handicrafts are invested with the mystique of nature, and an indefatigable ``joie de vivr''. Its capital, Imphal is the only plain area. Imphal is surrounded by hills in all the sides. Manipuri was recognised as a national language in 1992. Manipuri had been a Union Territory from 1956 and a full-fledged state from 1972.
