Meghalaya (pronounced [meːˈɡʱaːləjə]) is a small state in north-eastern India. The word "Meghalaya" literally means "The Abode of Clouds" in Sanskrit and other Indic languages. Meghalaya is a hilly strip in the eastern part of the country about 300 km long (east-west) and 100 km wide, with a total area of about 8,700 sq mi (22,720 km²). The population numbered 2,175,000 in 2000. The state is bounded on the north by Assam and by Bangladesh on the south. The capital is Shillong also known as the Scotland of the East, which has a population of 260,000. About one third of the state is forested. The Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion encompasses the state; its mountain forests are distinct from the lowland tropical forests to the north and south. The forests of Meghalaya are notable for their biodiversity of mammals, birds, and plants. Meghalaya is one of the country"s newest states with its capital at Shillong. Meghalaya or 'abode of the clouds', is a source of inspiration to any poet, a dramatic canvas for an artist's dream, and the ideal retreat for people in search of beauty and solitude. Declared as a state on 21st January, 1972, Meghalaya is one of the most picturesque states of India. Meghalaya is dotted with a number of divine tourist spots, where Nature unveils herself in all her glory. Meghalaya is divided into five administrative districts of the Jaintia hill, East and West Garo hills and East and West Khasi hills. Due to the enormous amount of rain it receives, it is counted among one of the wettest places on earth. No wonder it is called Meghalya Abode of the Clouds. Agriculture is the main occupation of Meghalaya, with eighty three percent of the total population, dependent on it for their livelihood.
 
Attractions
Nature in all its glory; limpid lakes, expansive rivers, unpolluted rushing streams breaking into waterfalls, twisting and turning, disappearing into the jungle. Beautiful lakes and falls, hillside cottages, a large university, and the popular Bara Bazar are quaint aspects of this town. Capital city has a number of beautiful sites like, Ward's lake, Lady Hydari park, Polo ground, Mini zoo, Elephant falls and Shillong peak, overlooking the city and the golf course, one of the best in the country.
