| Nagaland is a state located in the far north-eastern part of India. It borders the state of Assam to the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam to the north, Burma to the east and Manipur to the south. The state capital is Kohima, and the largest city is Dimapur. With a population of nearly two million people, it has a total area of 16,579 km² (6,401 sq mi)—making it one of the smallest states of India.
After the British colonial withdrawal from India, Nagaland became a part of the Indian State of Assam.
The early history of Nagaland is the story of the customs and economic activities of the Naga tribes. The people were originally referred to as Naka in Burmese languages, which means 'people with pierced ears'. The Naga tribes had socio-economic and political links with tribes in Assam and Burma (Myanmar); even today a large population of Naga inhabits Assam. Nagaland is situated in the north-eastern corner of the country and has Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur on its borders, while Myanmar is an international boundary on the east. The Naga Hills crosses through this small state,in which Saramati is the highest peak and its height is 12,600 ft. Dhansiri, Doyang, Dikhu and Jhanji are the main rivers which flows across the state.Earlier the place was ruled by the center but in 1963, Nagaland was made a state.
In Kohima, the Second World War Cemetery, State Museum and Zoo are the principal places of interest here. Excursions from Kohima lead to Khonoma village, Japfu peak, Dzakou Valley and Mokokchung. The Intaki sanctuary, at a distance from Kohima, is the home of the hoolok baboon, the only gibbon in India. |
