Orissa is divided into 30 districts from administartion point of view, of which Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam are situated on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Bhubaneshwar is the capital of Orissa which is situated in Khordha district. More than 80% of Orissa's population lives in villages. The most densely populated areas are the fertile coastal tracts and the least populated areas are the Eastern Ghats. About 24% of the population is tribal who are very fond of song and dance and their simple enjoyment of life and their customs and institutions are quite different and interesting.Oriya is the main language but in some places, Bengali and Telugu are also spoken. Tribals have their own languages.
There is cosmopolitan culture here in Orissa. All temples including that of Lord Jagannath are open to all . Besides Hinduism other religions followed in Orissa include Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity and Islam. The Oriyas have a feeling for beauty which has found expression in a rich heritage of arts and craft. Orissa's craftsmen are so much skilled in their work that they make beautifu utilities by using local materials. The tourist may see and purchase different handicrafts at the Cottage Industries Emporia at Bhubaneshwar. Stone carvers fashion miniature replicas of Orissa's great monuments, the folk tradition in art finds representation in wooden toys and the images of Lord Jagannath, the pat paintings depict episodes from Hindu mythology in bright and vivid colours. Cuttack specializes in delicate silver filigree and ivory work, and Orissa's saris and curtains with distinctive designs are the vogue among connoisseurs. The cuisine of Orissa has its speciality, It is a must to taste the native Oriya sweets and its pickles and sea food while visiting Orissa.
80% population of Orissa mainly depends on agriculture. Rice, pulses, oilseeds, jute,sugarcane and turmeric are the important crops. Forests cover about 43 percent of the area of the state. Iron-ore, manganese ore, limestone, dolomite, chromite, non-coking coal, bauxite, graphite, china clay, nickel ore, fire clay and mineral sands are among the important minerals of Orissa. The major mineral based industries of the state are the Rourkela steel plant, a pig iron plant at Barbil and a ferrochrome plant at Jaipur Road, two ferro-manganese plants, a ferro-silicon plant and an aluminum smelter plant. The power projects in the state are Rengali, Upper Kolab and Kendupatna. Besides Hirakud and Talcher, work on the new thermal and hydel projects like Sindol, Chiplima, Duburi, Naraj, Gopalpur, Durgapur and Hirma is in progress. When to visitThe winter season, November to March is the best time of visit to the state. There are both Western and Indian style hotels and Orissa is well served by a nation wide transport service. A trip to Orissa will remain a lifetime experience. |
